Fighting Chance Seattle

Empowerment through martial arts: our dojo offers karate, kickboxing, and self-defense classes to adults and teens.

Our values comes first. We strive to create a safe-space for all of our students to train. We believe in working with each student to achieve their goals. We offer three main classes:

Kickboxing Ryoku, our flagship program, features authentic kickboxing and functional fitness taught within the framework and principles of old school karate.

Teen Martial Arts is our afterschool kickboxing, karate, and self-defense class designed specifically for teens.

Self-Defense for Women is a one-day workshop, a three hour primer on self-protection strategies. This class is "opt in" each student participates to the level of their comfort.

We love working with beginners!

[02/08/17]   Well-meaning, but ultimately sexist, reductive, and patriarchal self-defense offerings for women and girls taught by martial artists are harmful. They are usually (but not always) taught by men. And they are always completely oblivious of rape culture, objectification, and the systems of oppression that create the context for violence against women. Often they reinforce harmful myths and talk down to participants.

Being a martial artist DOES NOT QUALIFY YOU TO TEACH SELF DEFENSE! Muay Thai and BJJ are sports! They teach you nothing about actual self-defense tactics, awareness, and best practices!

If your heart is in the right place, take the time to get educated. And be prepared to listen, to feel uncomfortable, and to have your assumptions challenged. Talk to women. Read material by women. Know the student you are trying to reach!

[02/06/17]   Feb 6, 2017: SNOW DAY | All classes are cancelled today due to the snow. Stay safe and enjoy the evening off. Bring your energy on Tuesday and Thursday for new circuits in Kickboxing Ryoku!

Iain Abernethy

This is a great off-the-cuff podcast, Iain talking about patience, planning, and his journey as a karateka. When he says impromptu, he means it, this podcast was recorded while Iain was here in Seattle, we got to Kris Wilder's place and Kris just looked at Iain and said, "Hey, come do a podcast" and off they went :)

When I visited my good friend Kris Wilder earlier this year, we sat down and did this impromptu podcast! Listen and download via this link: http://www.stickmanpublications.com/028-iain-abernethy-4-questions-podcast/
